Switzerland: The great disillusionment of youth
|
Two years after the declaration of independence, unemployment and restrictions on visas for foreign angry youth. Some fear a resurgence of violence
Comment: The article was written on the second anniversary of Kosovo’s independence. It describes the disillusionment of young people, who were hoping that the two years bring about more changes, especially in terms of welfare and mobility. The article quotes UNICEF saying that half of the children in Kosovo live in poverty and 2/3rd of children in the Roma Egyptian and Ashkali communities, whle unemployment among those under 30 is approximately 70%. Due to strict Schengen rules and lack of recognition of the country, travel becomes difficult. People move from rural areas to Pristina where parents often take two-three consecutive jobs, while they leave their children unattended. In this environment more and more youth come into conflict with the law. Terre des hommes is working in Kosovo to protect children from exploitation and to provide children and youth an alternative that is different from the violence promoted by KLA.
