Romania: Poor municipalities in Dolj are struggling with school leavers

Online “ecomunitate.ro” initiative describes the work of Terre des Hommes in the Romanian Dolj district, where local education authorities are faced with a high level of school drop out for kids aged 14. Tdh project school after school provides children at risk of school abandonment with a programme tailored to their needs through free catch-up lectures, school kits and hot meals. It also offers summer camps for children.
Romania, ranking third in the EU in terms of school drop out, is facing serious challenges especially with children from poor families in rural communities. The last eight years, the level of abandonment tripled accounting for 19% of school age children.
Project “school after school” as well as other initiatives from NGOs and local authorities are therefore welcome to tackle this increasing problem.
