Tdh has been intervening in South Eastern Europe since 1991. Today we implement Child Protection projects in Albania, Kosovo, Moldova and Romania.
Tdh developed a comprehensive anti-trafficking model of action between of origin, transit and destination. Our projects are now oriented towards the reinforcement of national child protection systems.
Other regional projects are implemented through our European advocacy office based in Budapest, Hungary. All activities are led by Terre des hommes – Child Relief and strongly linked with the Terre Des Hommes International Federation.
Terre des hommes is actively engaged in the prevention of child trafficking in Albania through prevention campaigns, schooling programs and social support at a communal level as well as by the repatriation and social or family reinsertion of children.
In Kosovo, Tdh is the sole NGO committed to the development of a program in the sector of Juvenile Justice. The judiciary system is confronted by considerable structural problems such as the lack of special institutions for minors and shortage of professionals in the social and legal fields, frequently leading to an inappropriate response of the law.
In Romania, Terre des hommes (Tdh) runs social protection and children’s rights projects. All these projects are managed by local partners, who are supported institutionally, technically and financially. In 2007, we will carry out a complete overhaul of our activities in Romania.
In Moldova the newest delegations opened in 2004. Tdh and its partners (UNICEF, DDC and OSCE) found there situations of recognized migration and child trafficking, in particular towards Russia, and set up the FACT project (Fight Against Child Trafficking), giving priority to prevention and assistance at a local level, in villages with a depressing lack of security, where the children are at serious migratory risk.
The Child Protection Regional Project run by Terre des Hommes is including a full advocacy dimension towards the EU policy through TDHIF European Office in Brussels . The EU represents a key actor for advancing child rights both within and outside Europe.
The Regional Child Protection Project for South Eastern Europe is located in Budapest, Hungary. It was launched in mid 2005. At the end of the pilot phase, in January 2007, Tdh decided to concentrate the efforts of the RCPP to contribute to the common goal: children in migration are better protected against exploitation.
Thanks to a partnership with the UEFA for four years, Terre des hommes is implementing a project called MOVE – Psychosocial Development of Children through Games and Sport, based on experiential learning and participatory approach in three countries of intervention.
GREATproject is designed broadly around a “Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) to development and global interdependency”. The project is adressing topics such as Child rights, women’s rights, Food rights, education rights (on skills such as: campaigning, lobbying, fundraising).
Mario project – supported by the Oak Foundation – is a joint effort of influential NGO players in the field of child protection who formed a joint advocacy platform to enforce better protection of migrant children in Europe and put pressure on European and national decision-makers about child trafficking issues.
Since March 2007, Terre des hommes is implementing a three-year counter-child trafficking global project cofinanced by the European Commission: “Enhancing capacity to address trafficking in especially children from a human rights perspective in South-east Asia, South-east Europe and Latin America”.
The project aimed to develop a “feasibility study” on the return of unaccompanied children who are presumed victims of trafficking in Europe.
Transnational Action against Child Trafficking (TACT) is the Tdh model of action to fight child trafficking in South Eastern Europe created in 2001.
