Based in Lausanne, Terre des hommes - Child Relief works in four priority areas in Switzerland, all of them relative to the
Convention on the Rights of the Child: protection of migrant children, adoption, development of prevention standards in the field of mistreatment and youth awareness and participation in children’s rights.

Terre des hommes is also involved in civil society debates, notably by taking a position in current affairs that relate to children's rights, or by participating in civic life. Furthermore, Terre des hommes continues its traditional work providing a welcome for children transferred to Switzerland for specialised care and operations in partner hospitals in Lausanne and Geneva, and accommodating them at Tdh-Valais “La Maison” in Massongex.

map_switzerlandIn the area of advocacy for the rights of the child , Terre des hommes holds the vice presidency of the Swiss Network for Childrens’ Rights, which lobbies for the Convention of the Rights of the Child in Switzerland and draws the Confederation’s attention to a list of 10 priorities to be set up as quickly as possible. Four of those priorities relate directly to Terre des hommes: the over-riding interest of the child in the areas of adoption, protection against exploitation of migrant minors; maltreatment in a coalition that campaigns against sexual abuse.

In the domain of prevention of child abuse, Terre des hommes and three partners (Swiss Olympic, Swiss Prevention of Crime and the Association for Child Protection) have created a three-language internet site on this subject regarding children and adolescents. Prevention starts in the children's direct social surroundings: in school, at home, in their leisure time, particularly sport, and on the Net.

This site is the first project of the Swiss Alliance against sexual violence towards children and youths, founded in May 2007. It is supported by the Federal Office of Social Security. (www.schau-hin.ch)

In the area of adoption , our service responds to couples applying to adopt as well as for adults who are seeking their origins. We work with other NGOs, institutional services, and journalists. At the beginning 2007, our Adoption Sector participated in an international conference about international adoptions in Nepal. In 2006, Terre des hommes published a report on our evaluation in Haiti, where we believe that children are being abandoned to international adoption and where we will soon begin a project to prevent the abandonment of children. At the beginning of 2005, our Adoption Service was called upon following the tsunami and the high risk of trade in children and provided recommendations for strict criteria to be observed in the domain of international adoption.

Image Our Youth Section works with adolescents and young adults, at the heart of organisations and associations active with young people. Terre des hommes has begun training young people and social leaders in Children's Rights' workshops which they can put to use in their groups. Our work has only just begun!

Terre des hommes has developed an information and exchange platform on the internet to raise young people’s awareness on the rights of the child. Discover our youth space, www.youtdh.ch (in French or German).
