[EU] Against human trafficking: the EC calls for extraordinary effort by the EU and Member States PDF Print E-mail

Comment: '7th Space' reaports that the European Commission approved on the 18th of October an evaluation of the implementation of the EU Action Plan to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings. The EC concludes that the EU has developed a dynamic process of approximation of legislation, both in the fields of criminal law and victims' support. However, there is still a serious gap between legislation and implementation.

Comment: According to the Deutsche Welle article, the number of registered victims of human trafficking last year alone in Moldova were over 2'000. The phenomena affects women in the form of prostitution, while men are forced into slave-like wage labor and children becoming beggars.

[India - UK] Belgium seizes 'people smugglers' PDF Print E-mail

Comment: The 'BBC' reports that about 200 Indian illegal immigrants on their way to the UK were rounded up by Belgian police as they smashed a human trafficking ring arresting 15 people in pre-dawn raids around Brussels. The would-be migrants were "mainly Indian men aged between 15 and 35, as well as some women and children."

Comment: 'The Telegraph' reports that 3 of its journalists have been recognised in industry awards for the excellence of their work. One reporter, David Harrison, "was highly commended in the Paul Foot Award for Campaigning Journalism, for his exposure of brutal gangs which buy babies from poor families in west Africa and sell them to families in the West, in a form of modern-day slavery."
